How's your year so far?

Occasionally, I go off script and instead of giving success advice, I just open up and shoot from the hip. This is one of those times.

It's almost April, so I ask, how's the new year go for you so far; how about those resolutions?

According to the University of Scanton's Journal of Clinical Psychology, only 8% of people are successful in achieving their resolutions.

That just absolutely floored me and got me to thinking about how I was stacking up as it came to my new year's goals.

As March 2016 is wrapping up, I recently spent a lot of time just reflecting on where I came from in just 4 short years. We can't successfully get to where we want to be if we don't understand where we have been.

Here is just a few highlights of my personal journey...

I very clearly remember being part of the 92% of people who failed to meet their resolutions, not just that year, but for many years.

For years I knew that I couldn't create a better life for my daughter by working a dead end job that kept me bound by someone else's schedule, so I tried everything to get out of the rat race; I built an engraving business, got into e-commerce, even tried my hand at authorship, but nothing worked and I kept finding myself in a position where I was having to go back to a 9 to 5 or be a stay at home dad where we barely lived paycheck to payccheck. Nothing seemed to click.

  • I was a slave to the job, a slave to the clock, a slave to my creditors.

  • I had no time to do the things I enjoyed.

  • I had no energy to enjoy time with my family.

  • No extra money, so no savings, no vacation, no splurging, no emergency fund.

To make matter worse, I couldn't get on facebook without seeing, what seemed to be everyone around me, being more successful than I was. It sucked. Friends taking off in the middle of the week to travel across country, new cars, new house, blah blah blah...

It seemed like everyone around me was successful while I had to listen to my daughter (4 years old at the time) crying because I couldn't afford a happy meal for her.

I kept asking myself,

"Why is this so hard?"

I definitely had a bruised ego, but I still had this dream that I could make a little extra money while spending more time with my family and not chained to a desk or getting stuck in traffic.

I started thinking that the only way to make money online was to sell stuff on eBay or turning into some sort of sleazy MLM type marketer (not that all MLM ventures are pyramid schemes). It was heart breaking because I did not want to do that.

Being able to help people and actually get paid for it was unfathomable to me and, though I saw it done, I felt that you had to be an expert with over 20 years expertise and the title of guru to be able to be successful online.

I was wrong!

Way wrong. Looking back on it, I was always just a few steps away from my dream, I just didn't see it or understand what it was that I was missing.

My goal for the past decade or so, was to figure out how to get out of the rat race. Breaking the golden handcuffs once and for all.

I finally found the secret to having a successful life; After years of trial and error, Zig Ziglar has been giving the answer for years; "You'll get everything in life that you want if you help enough people get what they want."

This is the reason for this blog series. My goal, now that I am out of the rat race, is to show as many people as I can how to do the same.

Now it's your turn

What is your resolution? How can I help you climb out of the maze? Not everyone has the same definition of success, nor do we all have the same hurdles to jump over, so what do you need help with?

Drop me a note and let me know.

Your New Year's Resolution:Start A Home Based Business

Start your New Year off with a Home based business. I always tell people that unless you are working for yourself, you're simply fullfilling someone else's dream. And you know it. I have learned many exciting techniques in running a successful home based business and I would like to share them with you.

Now Consider this:

I am sure, if you have been reading my posts for long, that you see it is possible for you to start your own business and kick start your legacy Are you beginning to see how realistically staggering it truly is? If not, I need to apologize to you because I haven’t done my job.

I am extending you an open invitation to duplicate my success and the success of countless others by first changing your mindset and then your life. If I was able to do it, I I know you can.

So I ask you...

Will you be the next Success story in a home based business in 2016?

Sadly, most people have flat-out given up on the life of their dreams... and they've resigned themselves to a life of struggle, lack, and limitation.  They suffer in the Land of Opportunity.  And they are fooled into believing the lie that it has to be this way. Most people don't realize that with proper leadership and the right opportunity, virtually anyone with desire can achieve the lifestyle and level of income the want with ease!

I'm living proof: Ever since I've started my home based business I feel a rush of internal excitement. I am literally helping people just like you exit the rat-race and achieve the same level of success I enjoy.

You need to possess a willingness to be successful. The individuals you associate with will help you be that person.  Successful people tend to affiliate with others who posses the same attributes.

Wishful Hoping & No Action is Not Going to Cut It.

Here a three reasons why:

1.  There is nothing Casual About Worthwhile Achievement.  You must Earn your way to success in life-no matter what you do.  Only then will you achieve  a casual life style with enough money for you and your family to enjoy it in style. My personal achievement channel was my home based business.

2.  Trying is Not Doing. People with a " see what happens" attitude get to see what happens,alright...they sit their lazy butts down as they "see" others rapidly making wheelbarrels of success-but they  never do it themselves.  The success of entrepreneurship depends soley on YOUR drive and desire.

3.  You need to be honest with yourself to avoid wasting your time in a home based business.  If you only kid yourself, you won't experience a positive change in your life until you First make a postive change. Through personal growth techniques I realized that focusing on positive energy will replace the negativity that is keeping you from achieving the success in your home based business that is vital for your financial freedom.

I deserve my success because I took charge of my life.  If you’re wondering what I do with the rest of my time, I spend it with my family; I help worthwhile charities, I ENJOY LIFE and I CHOOSE MY ACTIVITIES.

Make 2016 the year that you decide to move forward and not just be a pawn in creating someone else’s life.

Being a Continuous Learner

When people ask me what business I’m in, I often say, “I’m in the learning business.”  It sounds intriguing, and it is certainly true.  But, truth be told, we are all in the learning business.

Why?

Because as humans, we are learning machines.  We are most alive and functioning closest to our potential when we are learning, adapting, adjusting, and finding new ways, approaches and techniques to improve our lives (or the lives of others) in some way.

I believe in the above statements.  They are as true as any other statement I could write here.  But rather than talking about the philosophy of humankind, let me get much more pragmatic.

Change and Learning

Change is all around us.  Some say the rate of change is increasing, but whether that is true or not, this is definitely a fact in our business lives.  Products change, Customers change, process and policies change.  We are put on a new team, we are entering new markets, and we have set new goals.  In all parts of our daily professional lives change surrounds us.

In order for us to cope with that change, we need to be willing and able to change.  And learning is a key component in developing that ability.

So when I talk about continuous learning or life long learning, I’m not suggesting everyone needs to take a course at their local college, or go back to school for a new degree.  Continuous learning is an attitude and a set of behaviors that allow us to succeed in our ever-changing environment, and is the best lever we have to turn who we are today into who we want to be tomorrow.  Change requires learning and conversely, there is no learning without change.

So if life long learning doesn’t necessarily mean the “professional college student” and doesn’t require us to be the person who was always asking questions in every class we ever attended, what are the behaviors that make up a true continuous or life long learner?

I’m glad you asked.

The Behaviors

There are some common threads among those who actively are learning and growing as professionals (and humans).  Life-long, continuous learners:

Have a beginner’s mindset. If you approach anything with the mindset of an expert, you will learn nothing.  With the expert’s mind, you are looking for confirmation and validation of what you already know; a beginner on the other hand, looks constantly for one new tidbit, one or more ways to expand on their current expertise.  In other words, expert or not, they don’t think that way, because they know that only with a open, beginners mind, can they benefit from the learning opportunity.

Make connections. Peter Drucker, the famous and influential management thinker wrote, “To make knowledge productive we will have to learn to see both forest and tree. We will have to learn to connect.”  Continuous learners do that.  They continue to think about what they have learned in one part of their life and how it relates to and connects with challenges, problems, opportunities and situations that occur in other parts of their life.

Are flexible and adaptable. Learning requires change, so continuous learners realize that they must be willing to adapt and change if they want to grow.

Are always learning something. Continuous learners learn new things “just because.”  They’ve always wanted to play guitar, so they take lessons.  They want to ride a unicycle, so they try it.  They learn how to quilt.  They learn a new language. These people don’t invest the time required just so they can play “Love Me Tender” or say “good morning” in Chinese.  They also do it because they realize that our brains are like muscles.  The more we exercise them the stronger they will be.

Are continuously curious. One of the most powerful learning questions we use is “Why?”  Why is the question of the curious.  Continuous learners remain curious about people, places, important and mundane things as well.  By cultivating their curiosity they are adding to their knowledge and perspective, while exercising an important part of our learning brain at the same time.

Learn in multiple ways. In school we learned in a relatively limited number of ways, which unfortunately leaves some people with a limited view of learning.  Continuous learns know that they can learn by reading, by listening, by trying, through others, with a mentor, etc. (etc.!)

Teach others. Something magical happens when you teach someone something – you suddenly understand it better yourself.  Continuous learners teach others not just to help the other person (or to show them how much they know) but because they know it helps them deepen their mastery of their own learning.

How to Use This List

Now that you have read this far I hope you are convinced of how valuable it can be to be a more active learner.  You have also read a list of characteristics.  Now that you have read that list of characteristics, I’d like you to read it again.  As you read it ask yourself these questions:

How well do I stack up against these behaviors?

Which ones would I like to get better at?

Who do I know that is exceptionally good at each of these characteristics?

How can I learn these traits and habits from those I know who are better at them than I?

Your answers to these four questions (and the action that you take) will put you on the road to being a more continuous and life-long learner.

Enjoy your journey.

Believe In Yourself And You’ll Change Your Life!

Today is my birthday and as a special gift to you, I want to send you some inspirational videos and a free book to help you in this upcoming year. It doesn’t ask for your email address, I am not soliciting anything, this is for you and your success, absolutely free.

Just click here and enjoy.

You may have heard someone say this about beliefs. It sounds contradictory, even ridiculous, but you had better believe that it’s right! Understanding your beliefs, how they control your life and the traps caused by beliefs is a key ingredient in the mental game of success.

WHAT ARE BELIEFS

Very simply beliefs are those things that we believe to be true.

”If  You Believe You Can Or You Believe You Can’t, Either Way You’re Probably Right…”

The first trap is that beliefs are personal – what we believe is not the same as what other people believe – two people can look at exactly the same thing and have different beliefs about it… and both can be right.

Yet we all fall into the trap of believing that our beliefs are right while anyone who holds different beliefs is wrong!

Some beliefs are built from shared experiences – we all believe that gravity will cause objects to fall to the ground – most people recognise this one! These basic beliefs which come from incontrovertible external facts are shared by the whole of humanity.

However, the majority of beliefs are not so clearly defined. They are about ourselves and the world we live in- who we are, how we should react, what is good for us, what is bad for us, who we should trust, who likes us… These beliefs are more likely to be shared by smaller groups of people – our friends, family, our cultural groups – or be personal to you as an individual.

Beliefs are formed throughout your life, in childhood, by copying people you respect, as a results of repetitive events, or even single, very emotional or traumatic events. You can also pick up beliefs from your culture and your environment. You will have some beliefs for your entire life while beliefs about some things may be changed several times during your life.

It is also important to realise beliefs are not values. Values are more fundamental statements about what is important for you and often underpin your beliefs. You can find out more about values in my article “Are Your Personal Values Aligned With Your Path to Success?”

Values frequently support your beliefs, although you can also hold beliefs that conflict with our values. Getting beliefs and values lined up is important if you want to be successful.

While you have maybe a few tens of values, you certainly have thousands of beliefs about every subject under the sun.

WHAT DO BELIEFS DO FOR US?

Beliefs are like a lens through which we look at the world. Like a lens they fundamentally distort, reshape and change the importance of the information that we take in through our senses creating the view that we really have of the world.

Beliefs have a strong effect on your behaviour, if you believe you should do something or think something then you usually end up doing or thinking it!

Beliefs strongly influence both what we do and what we learn from our environment - it is difficult for you to learn anything or do anything that you believe is going to be unpleasant or bad for you.

"IF YOU BELIEVE YOU CAN OR YOU BELIEVE YOU CAN'T..."

Beliefs not only shape our view of the world but they also control the way that we react, for example if you believe that someone does not like you, you are not going to react to them in same friendly way that you would to one of your friends.

Of course it may be that your belief is completely mistaken, that person may actually like you. However because you have decided that they don’t like you, you continue to react to them as if they were hostile and little by little their opinion of you becomes more negative.

If only you had started with a more positive belief…

Another example is the well known medical “placebo effect” in which something as simple as water administered in a way that causes you to believe that it is the drug that is going to cure you can in fact be as effective as the real drug.

==>Beliefs can have a shockingly powerful grip on your mind!!

WARNING - LIMITING BELIEFS CAN RUIN YOUR LIFE!

We’ve seen that beliefs can shape our world by affecting the way we perceive it and by affecting the way that we react to it. We have also seen how powerful they can be. This can make them a fantastic tool for you or a mortal enemy.

Positive beliefs that support your goals and values  will produce very positive results for you. However, through no fault of your own, you have almost certainly acquired some limiting beliefs during your childhood.

Limiting beliefs often begin with you saying to yourself “I can’t…”. They may even have been true, or are still true at some time in your life. The danger is that you are likely to automatically apply these beliefs to the rest of your life – jeopardising your future and your success.

For example it may be true that you don’t know how to do something today, but so often, the way that this is expressed is as “I can’t do…”. If you say that often enough it becomes a belief and as you’ve seen, this belief becomes the truth.

Even worse are limiting beliefs that are not based on the truth but on some belief that has been instilled into by your parents, your friends, your society… If you believe that you’re destined to be poor or that you’re not capable of making money, well the outcome is inevitable.

GIVE YOUR BELIEFS A CHECK-UP

Think very carefully about your beliefs, for the next seven days, watch yourself as you interact with people. Look for those “I can’t…” statements. Identify them, write them down, ask yourself just how much harm are they doing you. Do you really want to let them kill your chance of success?

Every time you find yourself making one of those “I can’t…” statements, turn it into a “How can I…” statement – “I can’t make more money” becomes “How can I make more money”. Can you feel the difference? If you do this consistently you’d better believe that you will find a difference in your life!

Again, it's my birthday and you get a gift. Click here to get an absolutely free, no solicitation, no requests. Just enjoy.

How To Achieve Great Success From A Home Based Business

Profitability is the most important factor to success with any home based business. A home-based business can run for a long period of time as long as you make it profitable.

However, as many businesses don't make a profit to start with this is often the first goal of the home-based business owners, and you should achieve this goal as soon as possible.

To achieve this goal you should focus on business development, be careful with your expenses and focus on what you are offering.

Focusing on growth is a key way to build your home-based business profits. In order to influence your results you should have the right mindset. If you don't have a profitable mindset then you are likely going to stay where you are.

Rather focus on growth and have the mindset to notice opportunities when they come along that can lead to gain, and then take action on these opportunities right away before they are gone. Again, success loves speed.

Next you must pay attention to your expenses seriously. All businesses have some expenses when they first start out even home-based single person businesses. Make sure you set up a budget that includes things such as advertising, utilities, office supplies and anything else that may be necessary to the specific home-based business you are considering.

On your list write down the expenses that are necessary for operating your business, these should be items that you need in order to make your home-based business profitable.

You will likely run into some expenses that you don't really need to operate your business. These are the expenses that don't make your business grow and only take away from the profits of your business.

Carefully consider before you truly need these expenses and if they don't make any profit then you should cut them for something that will actually help with the growth of your business.

However, you can only move your business so far by restricting your expenses. You also need income in order to gain profitability from your home-based venture.

Promotion is the most important factor to developing any business and gaining profitability. Basically you should focus on making your business known to people.

You can't expect to do business with them if they aren't aware of your company. While this may seem like an obvious point, the fact is that many businesses (home-based, store front, and internet based alike) fail simply because individuals don't spend enough time promoting their business. Once again, promotion is the key for your success.

If you have more than one product that requires promoting then consider focusing on just one main product for your business since you can focus most of your attention on marketing one product and once you get interested customers or visitors you can tell them about the additional products.

This will make it easier to run your business and you will also have better results from your actions. Remember, it isn’t impossible for you to promote many products at the same time, just time consuming and has a habit of dividing your concentrations.

These tips don’t just apply to those who are starting a new home-based business. You can still use these helpful advice to let you move your business in the right direction if you have been working on it for awhile and just can get it to work for you. By applying these tips you will be able to have success with your home based business no matter how long you have been in business.

Don’t forget that I am here for your success, if you have any topics that you want me to cover, drop me a line and let me know.

Leadership Quotes

Quotes To Motivate You And To Maintain Your Focus As A Leader

Would it not be great to have some leadership quotes that you can use when speaking with others or just to cheer yourself onward and upward? Possibly, these great quotes on leadership may help you.

This post on leadership aims to provide you with all the necessary matter you will need to understand more about Leadership.

Many times the words of others actually have far more impact and insightfulness than when those words are read within the pages of a dictionary. Quotations are rooted in actual performance, of leaders who have been there done that. They can be easily incorporate into everyday speeches or part of a training session.

Delving into the interiors of successful leadership has led me here. Leaders do indeed have a lot to tell.

These quotations help to define leadership to me:

Leaders are people who do the right thing; managers are people who do things right. ~Warren G. Bennis

Leadership appears to be the art of getting others to want to do something you are convinced should be done. ~Vance Packard

Leadership is all about getting results. ~Peter Drucker

Leadership is getting someone to do what they don't want to do, to achieve what they want to achieve. ~Tom Landry

Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality. ~Warren G. Bennis

Leadership is solving problems. The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help or concluded you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership. ~Colin Powell

Consensus is the absence of leadership. ~Margaret Thatcher

If you are seeking the purpose of leadership, you may feel comfortable using these quotations:

The very essence of leadership is that you have to have vision. You can't blow an uncertain trumpet. ~Theodore Hesburgh

The key to successful leadership today is influence, not authority. ~Ken Blanchard

The growth and development of people is the highest calling of leadership. ~Harvey S. Firestone

Leadership demands that we make tough choices. ~Alan Autry

A sense of humor is part of the art of leadership, of getting along with people, of getting things done. ~Dwight David Eisenhower

These are only a few and I could go on for hours with famous quotes from my mentors, and great leaders, but I hope that, from my writings, you develop a better understanding of leadership.

Or possibly you are trying to explain how to develop leaders within your business, organization or community? These quotations may help you achieve that goal:

The only real training for leadership is leadership. ~Anthony Jay

Leadership is the ability to do, not the ability to state. ~Paul Von Ringelheim

The supreme quality for leadership is unquestionably integrity. Without it, no real success is possible, no matter whether it is on a section gang, a football field, in an army or in an office. ~Dwight David Eisenhower

Leadership cannot really be taught. It can only be learned. ~Harold S. Geneen

Leadership is diving for a loose ball, getting the crowd involved, getting other players involved. It's being able to take it as well as dish it out. That's the only way you're going to get respect from the players. ~Larry Bird

The task of leadership is not to put greatness into humanity, but to elicit it, for the greatness is already there. ~John Buchan

The art of leadership is saying no, not yes. It is very easy to say yes. ~Tony Blair

Keeping in mind the important points about leadership and how it plays an important role in success and creating a legacy for yourself and future generations, I hope this post on leadership proves to be very informative for you. Use these points well.

Why Leadership Is So Important

Success in this business world today is competitive. To be successful in your own business it is crucial to have the necessary skills, including personal leadership, to distinguish you from every other business. It is possible in any economy to have customers and make money as long as you have leadership skills.

In our competitive world today, leadership skills are crucial to any successful business. What is leadership? Leadership is commonly used to refer to activities such as conducting, guiding, or directing people; initiating activity. However, leadership is also used to refer to someone who is a leader. How can leadership be applied in so many ways and what constitutes a leader in all of these situations? The answer is contained in the realization that perhaps the most fundamental characteristic of leadership, and therefore of leaders, is personal leadership.

Some individuals are born leaders while others have to procure the skill and talent to successfully make their mark as a leader. It is obvious that some individuals have the confidence and the charisma to make themselves role models for others to follow. These individuals do not require much guidance in nurturing their inherent talent.

But there are scores of others for whom developing leadership qualities is key to their success. Leadership skill training is of immense significance in the present day corporate world. Leadership skill training is imparted to concerned individuals to help them derive the maximum benefit as far as acquiring leadership skill is concerned.

At times it is not very easy for new leaders to change their role from a contributor to a leader. Leadership skill training empowers an individual to have faith in others and also assists him in utilizing his time fruitfully with others by grooming people with the aid of guidance, help, and training.

These skills may be tough to acquire, so the switchover to the status of leadership can be very demanding and at times unthinkable in the absence of effective guidance and help.

What is personal leadership? It is the ability to lead others and yourself in the direction you want your life to take. The ability to define what you want out of life and how you are going to get there is the first step in developing leadership. It is only the beginning because personal leadership means: leading, directing and taking action; it means living each day to the fullest. It also means developing goals that you want so badly that you live each day with enthusiastic vigor for reaching your goals, yourself, and all who are close to you. Knowing what you want out of life; knowing what success is to you; knowing what your goals are; knowing that you are going to achieve those goals regardless of what other people think, say, or do, is the essence of personal leadership.

Personal leadership also means: accountability. It means that you have decided to use the talents that are unique to you and will develop them further to reach your goals; it means that you realize that you have the potential to develop further. It means that you have determined the course of your destiny; you are the master of your life.

Leadership training also helps leaders who have the inherent talent in themselves to advance their ability and a sense of judgment to transform themselves into leaders of great repute.

Leadership Just by Being You

Leadership is all about being you and demonstrating personal authenticity rather than learning some formula from a textbook.  Aspiring leaders therefore need to be true to themselves; not slavishly following other’s ideas. Role models can be powerful and it doesn't hurt to model excellence when found; executive coaching is based on this premise.

Real leaders are prepared to reveal their weakness, because they know they are not super-human.  Obviously this doesn’t mean technical weaknesses or functional failings; this would fatally flaw their performance.  Instead, what is meant is that leaders should reveal their personality quirks – maybe they are bad tempered in the morning, are somewhat shy with new people or a little disorganized. Such admissions show they are human and this resonates with others confirming that the leader is a person – not merely a role-holder.

Revealing their true selves, leaders can allow others to know and help them and this makes for better teamwork; followers can also feel better if they’ve got something to complain about. Thus by sharing at least some of their weaknesses, leaders can prevent others from inventing damaging problems.

True leadership is therefore much more than a demonstration of strengths. Real leaders acknowledge their shortcomings and may even make them work for them.

Good leaders always rely on their ability to read situations. They develop a ‘feel’ for an environment, and interpret soft data without having to be told. They know when team morale is patchy or when complacency needs shaking up. There are three levels of situational sensitivity, each of which has its own specific skills.

Effective leaders are continually learning about the motives, attributes and skills of their important subordinates. They get to know their people through formal and, often better, informal contact such as when travelling together.

Effective leaders read their teams. They analyze the compound balance between team members, the tension between the tasks and processes, and how the team builds its competencies.

Finally, they are concerned with defining the cultural characteristics of their organizations and keep their finger on the pulse of the organization’s climate.

It sounds tongue-in-cheek to say that leaders care for their people. Ever noticed the cynicism in the workforce upon seeing a manager return from a people-skills training course with new concern for others. Effective leaders don’t need a training programme to convince their employees that they really care. They clearly empathize with their people and care intensely about their work.

Genuine concern is difficult because it always involves some personal risk – showing some part of yourself and your most strongly held values can seem quite scary. It may also take some detachment – the ability to stand back, see the whole picture and sometimes take tough decisions. Leadership never was a popularity contest

Effective leaders use their differences and move on to distinguish themselves through personal qualities such as sincerity, loyalty, creativity, or sheer expertise.

Using these differences is a critical leadership skill. But, as always, there is a danger - too much distance makes it impossible to sense situations properly or to communicate effectively.

What Color of Leader are You?

You are a leader if someone is following you. This could be as simple as one person watching you and following your example and encouragement, to being a leader in your home, your community, your workplace or even your nation. Leadership can take many forms, but typically it often involves managing people; one of the most difficult of all tasks. It means coordinating and motivating the actions of others to achieve a common goal. A leader has to establish that goal, and gain the willing agreement of others to be governed by and work together towards that goal.

The style of leadership taken by any leader is usually predetermined by the personality and motivational values of that person. They are who they are, as a personality, and that has a strong influence on the way they lead and communicate with others.

The study of personality traits has been ongoing for centuries, and there is a great deal of agreement and disagreement in the conclusions and findings of personality characteristics. In this post I am going to refer to the different types of personality in color form, adopted by by Linda Berens and Don Lowry.

Every personality type has particular talents and skills that lend themselves to good leadership. Any form of leadership however, is greatly enriched and enhanced if it is able to draw on the strengths and characteristics of the other styles.

A leader who has a strong Gold personality type is personally committed and dedicated to the goal. They work hard, and expect their team to do the same. They lead from a place of belief that the work is important, and has to be done right. Gold leaders value tradition- the ways of the past are proven ways, and so they don’t take well to new ideas unless they are well proven to have potential.

Leaders with a strong Blue personality are motivated by their commitment to the people involved, and a strong sense of community. They have a democratic style of management, valuing the input of employees and team workers. Blue leaders tend to see the big picture, and have the ability to inspire others with the vision.

The strong Green leadership style also sees the big picture as well as the complexity of detail. Green leaders excel in strategy. They bring intellect, ingenuity and design into the leadership role. They research and analyze facts and concepts, constantly looking for improvements for working smarter rather than harder. Facts and information are all important to the Green leader, and they pay little attention to the value of feelings and relationships.

Action is the focus of the Orange leader. Administration and organization exist to make action possible. They are great troubleshooters. The Orange leader leads by example, setting the standard to follow. Orange management style can be quite authoritarian and abrupt as they are impatient with opposition, and expect their directions to be followed. Above all Orange leaders welcome change believing that the old ways can always be improved on. A new project represents, adventure, a challenge and potential fun, all of which the Orange personality thrives on.

Every leader has a combination of all four personalities, but one will always be the stronger, more natural way to operate in. A leader’s style may also be a blend of their main strength, combined with their second strongest style.  A wise leader will understand the strengths and weaknesses of their personal leadership style and use those team members with different styles to bring balance and greater efficiency in meeting the shared goal.

A Better You: Your 7 days program to self-improvement

I think that I’ve lost count on how many times I've read and heard of celebrity marriages failing almost left and right. Not that I care (and personally I don't), it just seems strange that we often see movie and TV stars as heroes almost, living the fairytale life of riches and glamour. I suppose we all have to stop sticking our heads in the clouds and face reality that no one is perfect and they do not deserve to be idolized anymore than you or I do when it comes down to it.

There are many ways to lose your sense of self-esteem despite how trivial it could get. But whatever happens, we should all try not to lose our own sense of self, especially if it means comparing ourselves to others. I mean, I have had personal issues in my own life where I was let down by someone and it was totally devastating to me because I based so much of who I was on who I thought they were. We are responsible for our own actions, not those of others who will let us down eventually.

So what does it take to be your own hero in business and in life? Here are some of the things that I have come up with that I think will improve who you are based on you and isn’t dependant on the actions of a hero or mentor. In order to truly be successful, you must be your own hero.

1. Know your purpose

Are you wandering through life with little direction - hoping that you'll find happiness, health and prosperity? Identify your life purpose or mission statement and you will have your own unique compass that will lead you to your truth north every time.

This may seem tricky at first, especially if you find yourself in a tight spot or even a dead end. But there's always that little loophole to turn things around and you can make a big difference to yourself simply by determining what your purpose is.

2. Know your values

What do you value most? Make a list of your top 5 values. Some examples are security, freedom, family, spiritual development, learning. As you set your goals for 2015 - check your goals against your values. If the goal doesn't align with any of your top five values - you may want to reconsider it or revise it because any goal counterintuitive to your values will cause you to waffle on those goals.

3. Know your needs

Unmet needs can keep you from living authentically. Take care of yourself. Do you have a need to be acknowledged, to be right, to be in control, to be loved? There are so many people who lived their lives without realizing their dreams and most of them end up being stressed or even depressed over it.

List your top four needs and determine if they are legitimate needs that should be met or if they are counteractive to your purpose in life and need to be modified. Some have needs based on addictions, lack of education, etc. All of these needs are not real needs, but uncontrolled desires.

4. Know your passions

You know who you are and what you truly enjoy in life. Obstacles like doubt and lack of enthusiasm will only hinder you, but will not derail your chance to become the person you ought to be.

Your passions are those things in your life that help drive you. If your purpose involves your passions then achieving any goal is possible.

5. Live from the inside out

Increase your awareness of your inner wisdom by regular reflection. Commune with nature, take a spa day, take an entire day to lock yourself away somewhere just you and your hobby; get away and recharge your battery.

For most of us city slickers it's hard to even find the peace and quiet we want even in our own home. I personally love hiking old nature trails, sometimes I will take a sketch book with me and just disappear for a day, sometimes two.

6. Honor your strengths

What are your positive traits? What special talents do you have? List three - if you get stuck, ask those closest to you to help identify a few. Are you imaginative, witty, or good with your hands? Find ways to express your authentic self through your strengths. You can increase your self-confidence when you can share what you know to others.

7. Serve others

When you live authentically, you may find that you develop an interconnected sense of being. When you are true to who you are, living your purpose and giving of your talents to the world around you, you give back in service what you came to share with others.

As I often quote, Zig Ziglar said, “you will get everything in life that you want, if you just help enough people get what they want.”

Self-improvement is indeed worth it. It shouldn't lie within the confines of an office building or in the four corners of your own room. The real difference lies within us and is determined by how much we want to change for the better.

Law Of Success: Part III

Welcome to the conclusion of this special three part series commemorating the 21st Century Edition of Napoleon Hill's landmark work on success, "Law of Success," which reveals the 17 Principles of Success that can help take your life to the next level. These are proven principles based on  25 years of research and personal studies into the lives of over 500 of the world’s greatest achievers.

Law of Success Part I and Part II covered the first 11 of these principles. (To read Part I and Part II, visit the blog archives). Law of Success Part III will now conclude with the remaining 6 of these valuable, time-tested principles, which can help you, succeed in all areas of your life.

Principle # 12: Concentration

Concentration is the act of focusing the mind on a given desire until ways and means for its realization have been worked out and successfully put into operation.” – Napoleon Hill

In this age of mass communications, we are beginning to face a global epidemic of mass distraction that is becoming dangerous – and in some cases lethal. (The rising pedestrian and motor vehicle driver deaths due to the host of electronic distractions are just one sad example).

PSA: Don’t text while driving. A text isn’t worth your life, or worse, the life of someone who had nothing to do with your conversation.

The Weapons of Mass Distraction available to us are just overwhelming: email, cell phones, pagers, text messaging, video games, GPS navigational systems, video games, DVD players, TV, web cams, blackberries, faxes, ipods, and the explosion of social networking sites, just to name a few. (When used intelligently these tools can be powerful, but when used ineffectively, they become what I call, “Weapons of Mass Distraction!”

For concentration to be effective, Hill states that it is vitally important to keep your mind focused on ONE subject until you’ve mastered it; to focus on ONE given problem until you’ve solved that problem.

What I find helps is starting a task with a burst of energy and enthusiasm which will provide the momentum to complete the task successfully, in this age of sensory overload, some sensory deprivation might be in order.

Hill recommends that you set some time everyday where you can enter a quiet place, close your eyes, and put your fingers in your ears, blocking all light and sound, and just repeat your chief goal and see yourself in full possession of the goal that you are trying to reach.

I would go as far as to say that you need to take at least one day, or even a weekend per month to distress.

Principle # 13: Cooperation

Cooperation is the foundation of all successful leadership.” – Napoleon Hill

According to Napoleon Hill, there are two forms of cooperation: 1). The cooperation between a group alliance, such as a mastermind group (which was covered in my Law of Success Part I overview) to achieve a desired end, and 2). The cooperation between the conscious and subconscious minds to draw upon creative intelligence (a theme that continues throughout this overview as well as his book).

Power is developed through organized effort and, as they say, two heads are better than one. So for any organized effort to be successful, the harmonious cooperation of people focused on a singular purpose or goal is required.

Harmony is the key. And it would serve you well to study the main personality types of people before forming a team so you can bring together people who compliment each other rather than compete with each other. (“What Type Am I” by Renee Baron is a good first book to understanding personality types. I also previously mentioned Social Triggers).

One thing in the “Law of Success” that really struck me as powerful was an important observation Napoleon Hill had made: “A great leader is one who understands how to create a “motivating objective” that will be accepted with enthusiasm by every member of [the] group...Most people will work harder for the attainment of an ideal than they will for money.

What is your company or team’s “motivating objective” or ideal? In today’s terminology (thanks to Jerry McGuire), this would be your mission statement.

Principle # 14: Profiting by Failure

"If you want to increase your success rate, double your failure rate." -Thomas Watson, Sr. Founder of IBM

Profiting from failure is a topic that has been beat to death by personal development gurus so I won’t spend too much time on this principle. It’s overdone for the very same reason that there’s truth in the idea of people reaching higher levels of success by persevering and learning from failure instead of quitting.

It’s no accident that John D. Rockefeller felt that perseverance is the single most important quality to achieving success.

I’ve personally seen through the years, that success comes to leaders in almost direct proportion to the amount of adversity and failures they’ve overcome and learned from in life.

That old cliché, ‘if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again’ applies here. Of course, I’m not saying you necessarily keep on doing the same thing expecting the same results (another definition for insanity), but what I am saying is that the only true failure out there that will hurt you is the failure to get back up and try again.

I don’t know how many times that I have personally thought about throwing in the towel. In fact, when we were at our lowest, I had actually worked it out in detail how to commit suicide so that it looked like an accident in order for my wife to collect the insurance…the only problem with that was we didn’t pay our policy, so it wouldn’t have paid out anyway.

Don’t ever give up. Failure is a learning experience similar to on-the-job training vs. schooling; on-the-job training may take longer, but you gain knowledge and real-world experience, so think of failure as on-the-life training.

Seek counselors and mentors that you can trust to help evaluate the effectiveness of your plans. Explore what is limiting your success by asking them how they see you limiting yourself.

If your first plan to achieving your goal in life does not succeed, then change the plan. Keep on changing it until you’ve reached your target, just as an ocean liner makes thousands of adjustments and coarse corrections before reaching its destination, you too should constantly re-evaluate your plan to make sure that you are still on the coarse that you want to be on.

Principle # 15: Tolerance

Minds are like parachutes; they work best when open.” – Lord Thomas Dewar

If we adopt a closed mind we stop acquiring knowledge. And natural law states that we are either growing or dying.

I don’t like the word ‘tolerance.’ I much rather prefer the term “embrace new ideas” and have an insatiable curiosity for learning other people’s customs, belief systems, and unique perspectives. I look at it as an adventure in someone else’s life.

In today’s society, the word tolerance has been distorted to pass off someone’s bigotry and intolerance as a justified action. For example, a white comedian lets the “N” word slip in his act, he is a racist, but the leader of the new black panthers makes the comment about killing all white cracker babies and that is freedom of speech. Tolerance is a two way street and cannot be used to justify the actions of some while condemning the actions of others.

Finding ways to harness cultural differences within team dynamics and organizations will be the new currency in an increasingly globalized economy.

Principle # 16: The Golden Rule

Napoleon Hill recognized that the frivolous use of power from the knowledge that is being shared with you would only backfire and be destructive to self and others. Selfish pursuit of your goal without regard for others will eventually come back to bite you.

We reap what we sow. What goes around comes around. Therefore, the Golden Rule is: “do unto others as you’d have done unto you”. Before doing anything, ask yourself if it will benefit or hurt the person or persons involved.

It’s easy to be self-centered. To transcend self, think more of what the other person wants and feels before acting, that is what Zig Ziglar is talking about when he saying “You’ll get everything out of life that you want if you help enough people get what they want.”

See the good in others. Catch people doing things right instead of always looking for the wrong. Kindness and justice toward others goes a long way in establishing successful business and personal relationships. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said: “Trust men and they will be true to you; treat them greatly, and they will show themselves great.” To help with this, I suggest a short read called The One Minute Manager.

Hill takes us deeper with the Golden Rule philosophy when he said, “think of others as you’d wish them to think of you.” Live this philosophy and your life will be enriched in many unforeseen ways.

Principle # 17: The Universal Law of Cosmic Habit-force

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” - Aristotle

This is one of my favorite quotes on habit. The Universal Law of Cosmic Habit-force is that intangible, unseen force which is made tangible and visible in nature. Just observe nature and you will experience Cosmic Habit-force in action.

When you fix in your mind a purpose consciousness focused on your chief aim in life through repetition of thoughts and deeds, Cosmic Habit-force will take over and carry it to its logical conclusion, just as an apple seed will always produce an apple tree through proper care and nurturing.

It takes constant vigilance, determination, and willpower to maintain that purpose consciousness, but eventually Cosmic Habit-force will always bear fruit and your life will be richly rewarded.

In closing this series, I’d like to point out that at the beginning of every chapter in Napoleon Hill’s “Law of Success” are the words: “You can do it if you believe you can!

It’s that simple. I’m not saying it’s easy, but it really is that simple. Mahatma Gandhi once said, “If I believe I cannot do something, it makes me incapable of doing it. But when I believe I can, then I acquire the ability to do it even if I didn’t have it in the beginning.” Jim Rohn said, make a goal to become a millionaire. Not for the sake of becoming a millionaire, but for what you must become to be a millionaire.” Replace bad habits with good disciplines and watch things start to change in your life.

Believe in yourself! Believe you can do it and move forward this day with faith and confidence.

I hope that you’ve benefited from this series and I’d like to encourage you to share these important principles with your friends, family, and associates. I’d also like to highly recommend getting a copy of Napoleon Hill’s “Law of Success: 21st Century Edition” to add to your personal library.

It’s a life-changing book, and I mean that as no exaggeration. To get your copy, visit here

Law Of Success: Part II

Welcome to the second part of this special three part series commemorating the 21st Century Edition of Napoleon Hill's landmark work, “Law of Success,” in which he reveals the 17 Principles of Success based on his 25 years of research studying the lives of over 500 of the world’s greatest achievers. (To read the first part, look in the archives for "Law of Success: Part I").

Principle # 6: Imagination

Imagination is the workshop of the human mind and creative power of the soul,” as Mr. Hill states. “First comes thought; then organization of that thought into ideas and plans; then transformation of those plans into reality. The beginning, as you will observe, is in your imagination.

In his book, Hill explains that there are two types of imagination: synthetic imagination and creative imagination. Synthetic imagination involves rearranging old ideas into new combinations that produce new solutions. Stimulating creative imagination involves a repetition of highly emotionalized thoughts that can be combined with visualization, meditation, and prayer focused on a main goal or purpose or the solving a difficult problem, and then surrendering the thoughts to infinite intelligence to come up with new ideas, combinations, and plans.

Artists, inventors, and even entrepreneurs frequently use some combination of both types of imagination.

For example, writers will often intentionally stop writing in the middle of an uncompleted paragraph at a particularly challenging point in the plot and “sleep on it.” During the rest of the night their subconscious mind, through the powers of creative intelligence, will work on the solution, and by “sleeping on it,” the writer will come up with a better story than if he or she merely hammered at the keys until it was finished.

Artists will often times, leave a work in progress for a few hours or even days to come back and look at it with “a new set of eyes” or a new perspective, in other words.

Entrepreneurs will often brainstorm and write down all the ideas, challenges, and available solutions and resources concerning a challenge or problem and then “forget about it.” They might go on vacation for an extended period of time. On returning, or even while they’re on vacation, new ideas spring up that help solve the problem.

Note: I will break routine and go for a long hike or camping.

To further develop your imagination, study yourself; find out you personal motivations that drive you forward on certain tasks while avoiding other tasks like the plague. Study other people and their behaviors as well. If you want to know what the other person will do (whether a customer, boss, employee, partner, or competitor), use your imagination to put yourself in their shoes.

What would you do if you were that person? By being able to look from another’s perspective, you not only help build your imagination muscles, you also help build bridges.

Tip: Something that has helped me with getting into other people’s shoes is by understanding SocialTriggers. This guy knows his stuff. Derek has helped me figure out a lot about how people tick.

Principle # 7: Enthusiasm

Enthusiasm comes from the Greek root “entheos” which literally means God within. Enthusiasm is the vital force that impels action. Great leaders not only act, they inspire others to action from their own enthusiasm, which becomes highly contagious.

It’s not so much what you say as it is the tone and manner in which you say it that makes a lasting impression,” Hill adds.

I can remember a few years ago (more than I care to mention), while living in Arizona, I worked two jobs. Job 1 was for a hotel, while job 2 was for an athletic club. The level of work that I did was about the same at both. I went above and beyond in both.

The difference was, that in the hotel job, I had issues because I had worked years prior in landscaping and there was a situation where late one night there was a sprinkler head that had popped off. Rather than just report it to the grounds keeper and allow it to just keep running, I fixed it; a 10-minute fix versus hundreds of gallons of water in the street.

Anyway, grounds keeping manager expressed that he felt I was trying to take his job and began a campaign to get me terminated from my position, which HR couldn’t actually find anything to get rid of me on because I was a good employee, but following the perspective of the manager instead of viewing the whole situation, they began working toward forcing me to resign.

Now, job 2, working at the same time as job 1, I used the same work ethic. In this job, I saw a problem that I could fix; I fixed it and reported on the problem and what I did, just as I did in job 1.

The difference is that in job 2 I received employee of the year after only working there 4 months, $500 bonus, an award, and public recognition at the company party in front of 300+ employees and managers.

What is the take away here? Job 1 saw employees as an ‘expense’ and therefore a liability when a manager felt his job was on the line, while with job 2 all of the management saw their employees as ‘investments’ and worked to keep them happy, knowing that it would reflect through the employee to other employees and customers.

Like I always say, your customers should be your second biggest raving fans, your employees should be your first.

The companies that will turn out to be champions in this new information based economy are the ones that treat their customer service and sales staff as VPs of Customer Relations.

These organizations will have a HUGE competitive advantage by investing just a fraction of the money (money that would normally be lost to poor service) towards paying above industry average rates to retain quality customer service professionals, investing in their professional development, teaching basic human relations skills, and helping to create a better work environment and see employees who go above and beyond as investments and not threats.

Principle # 8: Self-Control

Staying on this vein, Hill points out that self-control directs your enthusiasm. A wise businessman will keep cool when others are hot. As Hill says, “Those who control themselves usually boss the job” or, in other words, Self-Control = Leadership.

It’s amazing how much more business one can drum up and how many more happy customers one can get by simply counting to ten, taking a couple of deep breaths, and thinking of something pleasant for a few seconds before making or taking an important call or going into a meeting.

Never retaliate against those who offend you. Be a leader by being a person of poise and self-control.

Principle # 9: The Habit of Doing More Than Paid For

Giving people a little more than what they expect is a good way to get back more than you’d expect” - Robert Half

Again, going above and beyond. We get back in life what we give. By getting into the habit of always doing more than you’re paid for, you will meet with opportunities for expansion, advancement, and promotion at every turn of the corner. (You might not get these opportunities immediately with your current employer; but eventually competitors could take notice and will gladly provide you with plenty of opportunity if your employer will not).

Napoleon Hill offers numerous real-life examples of ordinary people reaching extraordinary heights of achievement and success using this one principle alone in his book on success, Law of Success: The 21st-Century Edition.”

Principle # 10: A Pleasing Personality

Mr. Hill says that a pleasing personality is a person that attracts. It’s all about your character and how you carry yourself. Are you dressed for success as it relates to your field? Do you speak with self-confidence? Are you someone that genuinely likes to be friendly to everyone around you?

Do you offer a firm handshake and a warm smile, or a limp, ‘dead fish’ handshake with a rigid, forced smile? Or have problems looking someone in the eye when speaking to them?

The best way to develop a pleasing personality is to show a real interest in other people.
It’s so much more FUN and PROFITABLE to have a pleasing personality!

Principle # 11: Accurate Thinking

The facts, just the facts, ma’am” – Sgt. Friday in Dragnet (if you are old enough to remember that show)

Don’t believe everything you read in the news. Much of it today is propaganda and agenda-based partial truths. It doesn’t matter which political side you are backing, or anything like that, it’s just that the news used to be about facts and now it is interlaced with editorials projected as news.

Get into the habit of basing your decisions on factual information and avoiding gossip, rumors, hyperbole and conjecture. Always remember that partial truth means that some of it isn’t true. Make sure that you get all of the facts before making decisions based on the information, or worse yet, passing the information on to someone else.

Even common day practices that are widely accepted can be based on wrong assumptions. For example, in the middle ages, bloodletting was a common practice that was believed to help cure a variety of illnesses. It was a common belief among doctors that bad blood caused disease and so they bled patients for every imaginable ailment under the sun. This crude and ineffective medical ritual continued for 2,500 years until it was discovered that germs, not bad blood, were responsible for disease.

Imagine people willingly allowing someone to put leeches on them to remove their blood, that is disgustingly gross and the thing that nightmares are made of.

I think we need a new name for 21st Century bloodletting. I think we need to add the term moneyletting to the dictionary.

If someone makes a sweeping statement that raises doubts, you can ask this person the question that Napoleon Hill likes asking: “How do you know?”

We haven’t even begun to scratch the surface of accurate thinking. But to get to the heart of Hill’s main idea, accurate thinking is about separating the important facts from the unimportant ones and I would add to that and say that, whenever possible, emotion should be removed from the equation.

In politics, campaigns get to illicit negative emotional responses from people to turn them against their competition. The same concept is used in advertising; ads trying to make someone think that they will be better, healthier, stronger or happier with their product.

I hope you enjoyed Part II of this “Law of Success” series. Part III is just around the corner, keep an eye out for it.

In the meantime, share these principles with your peers, discuss the concepts and teach other people what you’ve learned. There’s no better way to learn than by teaching others.

If you haven’t already, I’d highly recommend getting a copy of Napoleon Hill’s classic bestseller: “Law of Success: The 21st-Century Edition.” It really is a great read and I rank it in my personal top 10 list.

Make Every Day Count

Have you ever caught yourself saying that you had way too much time on your hands? Probably not, and if so, it was probably more like something you heard from your parents when you were caught doing something that you shouldn’t have been doing.

The truth is that most of us just can’t fit it all in.  A day could be 27 hours and there still would not be enough time to fit everything all in. The number 1 most common mistake that many people make is attempting to find the extra time instead of creating it!

Question on your mind now is: How do I create time?

FIRST: Specify and define your most important goals and objectives that need to be accomplished:

Having a desire to reach specific goals will motivate you to make time for the actions it will take to accomplish the objective.

Know how you are going to spend the extra time created. Write it down as specifically as you can.

Answer the what, when, who and how questions and this will give you that extra push that you need to achieve your goal of creating more time.

SECOND, Every goal and objective is like a journey, by mapping it out ahead of time, you stay on course.

Brian Tracy, Zig Ziglar as well as many others recommend setting up a day’s schedule the night before then, first thing in the morning, review your schedule and make any modifications that need to be made.

In creating time, it isn’t about the hour, but about the minute. Most of us waste our time in the minute, which then quickly adds up to the hour that we can never get back. The best way that I have heard this point made is with the hole in the bucket analogy; picture two buckets, one with a hole in it and one without a hole in it.

No matter how often you fill the one with a hole in it, it will eventually become empty, while the one without the hole will fill easier and create less work for you.

THIRD, to keep with the analogy; plug the leaks.

Start assuming that every minute you do not have working for you, is, in fact, a minute working against you.

In order to make the most of every minute, try to incorporate these time savers into your daily schedule.

Take a look at all of your most common daily interruptions. Try to make a game of it to see how many you can eliminate, filter or outsource. Set up your schedule in similar blocks whenever possible; have a specific time for phoning people, move to checking emails, etc.

Should you be out visiting a prospect, use this time to check the mail, or other errands that would require you be out and about, as opposed to leaving multiple times for multiple tasks. Now these designated time blocks do not always work; the unexpected will happen, Murphy is alive and well, so you can allow for some flexibility. When you have a plan, however, for organizing, investing and implementing your time, it won’t be long before you find yourself with extra time to be more flexible with.

Know when your battery is fully charged. Determine when you are at your best both physically and mentally. Schedule your more challenging objectives during those times that you are most alert and attentive and you will accomplish more in less time. An example would be to save the emails for the end of the day or during a time of the day when nothing else is going on to distract you.

Time is money. Just like with money, the more wisely you invest it, the greater the pay out. Before investing your time in any activity, ask yourself this important question, "Is there something more important or productive that I could be doing with my time right now?"

Remember that, unlike money, time can never be recovered.

You can make the most of your life by making every minute count, every hour of every day and the compound interest received will be immeasurable!!
